Manjiri Asnare Kelkar + Jayanth Flute

Jayanth playing a large wooden flute

In this special double bill, discover the Carnatic tradition of the Indian flute, the bansuri, alongside the debut UK performance from one of India’s great contemporary Hindustani vocalists.

Playing flute with blistering speed and innovative technique, J.A. Jayanth has established himself as one of south India’s most brilliant emerging artists, having started at the age of five with his grandfather and guru, the late T. S. Sankaran. In this concert, he takes us on a journey through works by the composers that make up the Trinity of Carnatic music: Shyama Shastri, Thagaraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar.

Asnare-Kelkar is the rising star of the Jaipur–Gwalior khayal style of singing, enthralling her audiences with her extraordinary voice. This rare visit to the UK provides an opportunity to hear one of India’s greatest next generation maestros. For this concert, she is accompanied by Parimal Chakraborty on tabla and Chinmay Kolhatkar on harmonium, who support her spiritual, mystical and moving singing.
