Amid the extreme emotional turmoil of Beethoven’s symphonic journey came a moment of almost airborne calm, the Pastoral Symphony. Here the composer turns to nature – the scent of flowers, the reassuring serenity of the mountain stream. Storm clouds gather, but are dispersed by a gentle breath of hilltop wind and the fortifying strength of human celebration. Wagner’s delicate Siegfried Idyll must have appeared much the same when it was played by a small ensemble of strings outside the composer’s wife’s bedroom on the morning of her birthday – an idyllic gift, and an oasis among the birth pangs of Wagner’s epic Ring Cycle.
