Sir John Eliot Gardiner: Bach’s St John Passion

John Edward Gardiner conducting masterfully on stage

A supreme Bach interpreter brings a lifetime’s experience to one of Bach’s greatest sacred masterpieces in this Good Friday performance.

‘Bach’s St John Passion was conceived not just as a work of religious art but as an act of worship in itself’ says Sir John Eliot Gardiner. At the peak of a career devoted to studying, contemplating and performing Bach, his interpretations share that same, overwhelming conviction.

In fact, it’s hard to imagine a more compelling team of performers: Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists have done as much as any living artists to define the way we hear Bach today. Yet at the heart of their interpretations is an intense awareness that Bach’s genius is greater than any one group of artists, making each performance of this epic spiritual music-drama an act both of reverence and renewal.
