Women Lead the Way: Female Directors of 2020

We are thrilled to celebrate the female directors who led the way in 2020; releasing knock-out films which wowed critics and audiences alike

The number of cinemas around the world that closed for a chunk of 2020 had a huge impact on the quantity of titles released and what kind of films those were.  It soon became apparent that films by women were leading the way; garnering awards attention and critical praise, performing well at the box office and dominating film conversations in the media like never before.

As of November 2020, 25% of all UK cinema releases were by women*; in contrast, this was just under 21% in 2019 and only 17% in 2018. October 2020 saw a historic high of 38%**. We highlight and celebrate some of these films, that we sadly couldn’t show on release, in a programme full of unique visions from teams of brilliant women. We can’t wait to revisit them on the glorious big screen.

* With ‘by women’ defined as having the directing team/writing credits comprised of at least half women, and/or based on a book by a woman.

** According to figures from the Film Distributors’ Association, Birds Eye View and Comscore.
