Women Lead the Way

Alfre Woodard sits behind a big desk wearing a suit

A stunning performance from Alfre Woodard anchors this powerful prison-set drama, the second feature from director Chinonye Chukwu.

Bernadine (Woodard) is a prison warden, overseeing inmates on death row. Her difficult work spills over into a strained relationship with her husband Jonathan (Wendell Pierce), and when the impending sentence of Anthony Woods (Aldis Hodge) starts to occupy Bernadine’s working life, doubts about the death sentence begin to have a potentially life-changing effect.

Woodard’s performance is extraordinary here, with an understated quality which allows all of Bernadine’s feeling to be expressed without any wordy exposition.

This is a special #ReclaimTheFrame screening followed by an edited version of a pre-recorded Q&A filmed to tie-in with the release of the film back in Summer 2020, with writer and director Chinonye Chukwu and starring cast Alfre Woodard, Wendell Pierce and Aldis Hodge. Hosted by journalist Kuba Shand-Baptiste.
