Barbican announces POLIÇA + s t a r g a z e, plus Pink Kink to support Pussy Riot Theatre’s Riot Days

JUST ANNOUNCED

POLIÇA + s t a r g a z e
Tuesday 27 February 2018 / Oval Space / 19:30
Tickets £22.50 plus booking fee

POLIÇA and s t a r g a z e will take to the stage at Oval Space on 27 February 2018 in a Barbican-produced concert featuring music from their forthcoming album, Music For The Long Emergency – released via Transgressive on 16 February 2018.

POLIÇA, an electronic pop band based in Minneapolis, and s t a r g a z e, a Berlin-based chamber orchestra interested in pop and electronics, were introduced via the Liquid Music project run by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota. First meeting in person in February 2016 in Berlin, the two bands began to improvise over a handful of song sketches brought by POLIÇA’s Ryan Olson. Olson recorded the Berlin improvisations and incorporated them into several tracks he sent to the s t a r g a z e collective a few weeks later. What followed was a long-distance musical romance of sorts, sustained by emails, mp3 files, video conferencing, as well as occasional meet-ups in Berlin, Minneapolis, and Eau Claire.

Coming together again in October 2016 to prepare for a week-long residency culminating in a festival at the Funkhaus in Berlin — the former headquarters of the GDR state radio - the players wrote, rehearsed, and developed ideas in the venue’s Studio 2. The resultant album, more than a simple collaboration, is a record with its own distinctive voice.

s t a r g a z e is an ever-evolving project, marrying modern composition with alternative attitudes and sounds. Their previous releases and projects include a re-interpretation of the music of the alternative experimentalists Deerhoof, Deerhoof Chamber Variations, and a takeover of the BBC Proms for the David Bowie night, which saw s t a r g a z e collaborate with artists as diverse as John Cale, Elf Kid, Marc Almond and Anna Calvi and others. They have appeared at the Barbican several times in recent years, including performances with Julia Holter, Nilhs Frahm and The Dodos.

POLIÇA, led by vocalist Channy Leaneagh and producer Ryan Olson, are an experimental electronic outfit that have released three acclaimed albums of dark, personally political pop.
