Costa Brava (15)

Queer 90s

Still from Costa Brava

A struggling lesbian artist in Barcelona falls hard for a flaky Israeli engineer in this English-language romantic comedy featuring a delightful performance from writer-director Marta Balletbò-Coll.

As if Anna (Marta Balletbò-Coll) didn’t have enough to deal with. Working as a tour guide in Barcelona while desperately trying to raise funds for her one-woman show, she falls in love with an exasperating engineer from Israel (Desi Del Valle), who is reluctant to commit. Opposites nonetheless attract, but a job offer threatens the relationship – can the two lovers make things work?

Shot in 14 days on a microbudget in Barcelona and the Costa Brava, this fun and breezy English-language comedy, a queer festival favourite on its release in 1995, boasts a charismatic, instantly relatable performance of great charm from Balletbò-Coll – if there were any justice, she would have become a huge star. At least we have Costa Brava to remind us of what could have been…
