A father and daughter hug at a window in Reflection

A Ukrainian military surgeon is captured by the Russian military forces in the Donbass region in Valentyn Vasyanovych’s brilliant, disturbing drama, set in 2014.

Navigating between Kyiv and Eastern Ukraine, Reflection pays equal attention to war’s horrific devaluation of human life, and to the trauma inflicted on the survivors psyche. Frames-within-frames, often shaped as screens, populate almost every shot in the film, filling it with striking metaphors and provoking the spectator to accept the role of a witness.

Directed, filmed and edited by Valentyn VasyanovichReflection shares a universe with his acclaimed Atlantis (2019). The film’s singular vision and pressing questions on PTSD, family, and the limits of fate, place Vasyanovich as one of the great contemporary voices of Ukraine.
