A Voice of His Own

BBC SO Total Immersion: Discovering George Walker

A voice of his own: the BBC Singers perform the vocal music of George Walker and his contemporaries.

Beginning a day of Total Immersion in the music of the American modernist composer George Walker, the BBC Singers present a concert devoted to his vocal music – and the poetry, ranging from Shakespeare to the Bible, upon which he exercised a far-ranging musical imagination.

'Any kind of creative effort must attempt to say something new' said George Walker, but he found his voice amid a generation of American idealists, experimenters and visionaries, all determined to speak directly to their time, and their society. This concert focuses on small-scale music with a big personality, including works by Samuel Barber, and fellow pupils of Walker’s early mentor Rosario Scalero.

This performance will finish at approximately 2pm
