Missing in Brooks County (#)

Cinema On Demand

A still from Missing in Brooks County, two people putting up a missing poster on a lamppost

This powerful documentary follows the essential work of those who try to identify the anonymous souls who lose their lives along the US-Mexico border.

In Texas, the ongoing humanitarian crisis means that not only do many migrants die at the border, but most who are reported missing are never found. We follow volunteers, including Dr Kate Spradley, who directs Operation Identification, and Eddie Canales, director of the South Texas Human Rights Center, who installs water tanks along some of the most treacherous routes. Alongside them, filmmakers Jeff Bemiss and Lisa Molomot also present contrasting views, of those who resent the migrants and patrol the border to deter them.

The filmmakers are clear-eyed in their attempt to show a portrait of a community, rather than a polemic, but where our sympathies should lie are clear. As Bemiss put it to Time magazine, “What’s happening in Brooks County is so extreme that you have to see it to really get your mind around it.”
