An Unusual Summer (12A*)

Palestine Film Festival 2020

A CCTV image of a car park in An Unusual Summer

Following an act of vandalism, the filmmaker's father installs a camera to record the scenes unfolding in front of the family house.

Everyday life, neighbours going to work, sisters gossiping; surveillance footage captures the poetic rhythm of life. In the microcosm of this street corner, we witness the daily choreography of the Palestinian city of Ramla. "Life must be disrupted in order to be revealed," the screen prophetically tells us, words dancing along uncalibrated lines.

Coloured, serrated images, punctuated with stolen sounds and a child’s observations; director Kamal Aljafari creates a mechanical diary that scrolls along the screen. This technical and spatial film device presents the audience with a personal and eminently political fresco.
