Women of the Gulag

A collection of unique and candid interviews with women who survived the Stalin's repression of the 1930s.

Marianna Yarovskaya’s documentary tells the compelling and tragic stories of six female survivors of the Gulag. It was shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Documentary - Short Subject.

While Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago largely tells of the men caught in Stalin’s camps and special settlements for “crimes against the state”, this acclaimed film features six women, all in their eighties and nineties, who tell their stories while going about their daily lives in remote villages in the Urals, in the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia and in the suburbs of Moscow.

“The stories of the victims of the gulag, told by people who had little or no understanding of why this was happening to them, make an excellent antidote to creeping historical amnesia” - Anne Applebaum, Washington Post journalist

This screening is followed by a discussion with director Marianna Yarovskaya and Professor Robert Service.
