Ustad Shahid Parvez + Parveen Sultana

Darbar Festival 2018

Shahid Parvez playing a sitar

A truly special performance from two of India’s most acclaimed musicians, sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez and the ‘Queen of Indian classical music’, Parveen Sultana.

Ustad Shahid Parvez descends from six generations of sitarists and was trained by his father Ustad Aziz Khan. He is perhaps the most famous sitar player of today and has been described as ‘Indian music personified’ (The Hindu). Influenced by Ustad Vilayat Khan, his playing strikes a fine balance between traditionalism and innovation.

‘Queen of Indian music’, ‘genius of Hindustani music’, the ‘ultimate soprano’ the list of superlatives that have been used to describe Parveen Sultana are unending. Born into a family of musicians she gave her first stage performance at the age of twelve. A major celebrity in India, she has not been confined to her Classical routes, providing songs for many Bollywood films. Tonight, her voice will move across a staggering three and a half octaves in a performance that's both meditative and exhilarating.

This performance will begin promptly at the advertised start time and is expected to finish by 10.30pm – subject to change.
