Barking Nuns + Student Short Film

illustration depicting young people taking photos and dancing in Barking

Secondary students of Sydney Russell School work with theatre company Complicité in a performance of theatricalised research exploring the role of women in religion throughout the history of Barking

In Barking Nuns, students from Sydney Russell School delve into their local area’s history. You’ll discover the secrets of Saint Ethelburga - the first female Abbess of Barking Abbey, celebrating the rich feminist heritage of Barking and Dagenham. The students will perform a theatrical presentation of their research alongside a full choir.

Barking Nuns will be accompanied by Futurist Women of Barking and Dagenham, a short film collaboration between a group of young women from Sydney Russell School and award-winning artist-filmmaker Eelyn Lee that re-imagines stories of migration, struggle and achievement.

Across the Change Makers weekend, Young Photographers will exhibit their work in the Broadway foyers. Their photos capture figures and places from Barking & Dagenham.
