Diaghilev

Creator of the Ballets Russes

Focusing on the work of impresario Sergei Diaghilev, this major exhibition demonstrated the development of his creative vision and drive.

Beginning with his work in St Petersburg with The World of Art (Mir iskusstva), a group of aspiring young Russian artists including Bakst and Benois, the exhibition traced Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929) and his move towards theatre and his introduction of Russian performing arts to Paris which culminated in the creation of the Ballets Russes. The company figured such talent as Nijinsky and Pavlova with innovative stage and costume designs by Bakst, Serov and Golovin.

The exhibition featured work from the key exhibitions organised by Diaghilev together with original costumes, theatre designs and documentary photographs from his productions, many of which had never previously been seen in the West.
