Beyond Japan

A Photo Theatre

An exhibition examining Japan’s post-war recovery and the emergence of Tokyo as the axis of an international culture.

The exhibition presented a series of dramatic installations which traced the entire post-war period through the work of photographers, writers, dancers and leaders of the underground theatre in Japan.

Beyond Japan culminated in the work of leading designers and artists of the post-war era. These figures included art director, Issey Miyake, set designer Eiko lshioka and Comme des Garçons, one of the most outstanding fashion design groups to emerge from Tokyo in the last decade. Together with Californian video artist Bill Viola, the multi-talented David Byrne from Talking Heads, and the legendary photographer William Klein, they have created work which has re-shaped our sense of Japan.
