The Lock-In

Anita Dobson in the Queen Vic

There’s no need to worry about last orders, as Stanley Schtinter’s unique artwork stitches together every scene that takes place in EastEnders’ pub, The Queen Vic, to create an ‘endless’ screening.

The Lock-In is a celebration of the British pub as it emerges from the challenges of the pandemic. Trawling through every episode of the iconic soap opera, Schtinter spent lockdowns using video editing software to remove every scene that wasn’t in the Queen Vic, creating a 100-hour ‘lock in’.

Described by actor Anita Dobson (the soap’s legendary landlady Angie Watts) as ‘an interesting project!’, we’ll be screening The Lock-in after it finishes an eleven-pub tour of the East End, by which time the BBC will have turned 100 and the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee.

East London-based Schtinter has been described as an ‘artist’ by the Daily Mail, and as an ‘exorcist’ by the Daily Star. From May 2021 to May 2022, he presented Important Books (or, Manifestos Read by Children) at Whitechapel Gallery.

Please Note: The Lock In will be screened on a single monitor in cinema 1 foyer during the centre opening hours. On 4-6 July it will be available to watch only from 5:30pm.

Review

‘Stanley Schtinter has made an epic film out of all the scenes set in the soap’s famous bar... The Warholian result is a spellbinding – and frequently baffling – meditation on time‘
