Dichterliebe

Mark Padmore & Jonathan Biss

A black and white portrait of Mark Padmore gazing into the distance

The songs of Robert Schumann trace a poetic journey through the intricacies of the human heart: hear tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Jonathan Biss explore their riches.

For Robert Schumann, music and love were the two wings of the soul, and this evening of romantic song ranges from the most intimate confessions to emotionally wrought anger. And there is no-one better to guide us through this untamed landscape than Mark Padmore – an artist born to sing lieder – and Jonathan Biss, a virtuoso with the instincts of a chamber musician.

‘Padmore did not so much sing this music as inhabit it’, wrote the New York Times. ‘He seemed less concerned with tonal allure than with tracing every line, every emotion as it passed.’ So expect a true collaboration in songs that are infinitely more than the sum of their parts, as they perform the full 20 songs of Schumann's Dichterliebe cycle.

This performance will finish at approximately 9.15pm, including a 20 minute interval.
