Family Film Club: Mary and the Witch's Flower (U) + Show and Tell

Cyberfeminism on Film

From Mary and the Witch's Flower

When Mary follows her neighbour Peter’s cats, she finds a flower that grants her magical powers. Flying a broomstick is fun, but what can she do when Peter is in trouble?

Sent to live with her strict great-aunt, Mary’s discovery in the woods of a flying broomstick takes her to Madame Bumblechook’s magic school, where she become a brilliant witch. But when she learns that the source of her powers comes from the sinister Doctor Dee’s special technologies, she realises she needs to use all her powers, magic and otherwise, to save a friend in danger.

This charming animation from Studio Ghibli’s Hiromasa ‘Maro’ Yonebayashi, adapted from Mary Stewart’s children’s book The Little Broomstick, is a gentle and timely film about using power responsibly and taking care of the planet – and each other.

We’re delighted to welcome So Mayer for our Show and Tell before the screening, sure to delight all witches, cats and young environmentalists.

Adults can only come if they’re bringing a child, and children can only come along if accompanied by an adult. If you’re over 18, we’re afraid being a ‘big kid’ doesn’t count.
