In The Heat of the Night (12A)

+ Introduction by Adrian Wootton

A still from In The Heat of the Night

Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger team up to solve a hate crime in this acclaimed murder mystery.

Scintillating, suspenseful and justly acclaimed, this 1960’s murder mystery is set (in the then still deeply racially divided and prejudiced) Deep South USA.

Creating two unlikely allies out of a wiley redneck police chief (Rod Steiger) and a sophisticated black northern city detective (Sidney Poitier) to solve a hate crime, In the Heat of The Night accurately reflected the civil rights struggle of the time and became hugely popular. So much so that Poitier revived his detective character Virgil Tibbs in two further cinematic outings.
