Into the Night: Family Day

LSO Family Concert

Join us for a day of free activities inspired by the current Art Gallery exhibition, Into the Night: Cabarets & Clubs in Modern Art.

Make masks and shadow puppets; write poetry and create text collages; become a designer and architect; plus take part in movement and sound workshops and perform in the Art Gallery itself! 

There is also a free activity sheet is available for families visiting the exhibition. Please ask at the Ticket Desk if you would like to have one for your gallery visit.
 

This event is free for all families and all ages.

Into the Night: Family Tour

Join us for a free family tour of the Art Gallery exhibition Into the Night: Cabarets & Clubs in Modern Art and discover more about the creative hubs of the late 19th Century including Paris’ Le Chat Noir, Vienna’s Cabaret Fledermaus and Nigeria’s Mbari Club. Make shapes, create shadows and explore the buzzing worlds of creativity and art.

Squish Space

India Harvey & Lisa Marie Bengtsson invite you to explore the possibility that play has no beginning or end, instead we are constantly engaged in the flow of interaction and exchange with children at play. Squish Space will be filled with items that help adults and children explore the communication of play together.

Make your own Bauhaus Theatre Set

Join Artist and Designer Sebastian Harding for a workshop inspired by theatrical designs of the Bauhaus movement.  Create your own paper set designs and see them placed in our 3D Model Theatre. Sebastian Harding is an Artist and Designer with an interest in architecture, Heritage and the vernacular of London buildings.


This drop-in workshop is suitable for ages 6+ 

Timings: 11am, 12pm, 1.30pm, 2.30pm

Kaleidoscopic Typography

Join artist Lara Verena Bellenghi to create your own collages inspired by Dada poetry. Lara Verena Bellenghi studied Fine Art at Oxford University and completed her MA in Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She is currently based in Vienna, pursuing her artistic practice and working for the education department of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. 

This drop-in workshop is suitable for all ages.

Music & Movement

Join musician and composer Chiel Busscher and dancer Laura Weston for a music-making and movement workshop. Create beats, sounds, shapes and motion, ending in a live performance in the Art Gallery.
 

Music: Come and create a piece of music from scratch, inspired by Café L’Aubette. How do we make music out of shapes? How do we make music out of energy? How do we make music for movement? No previous musical experience necessary. 


Movement: This workshop will explore the dynamics of the L’Aubette space and it's creative possibilities. We will create a short ensemble piece that draws on inspirations and artistic practices of the time working with movement and gesture as well as responding to sound and rhythm. No previous dance experience necessary.

Suitable for ages 6 and upwards. Every child must be accompanied by a parent. Suitable for all levels of experience. Comfortable footwear advised.

Marvellous Masks

Be inspired by the fabulous Mexican paper masks by German Cueto, on show in the Art Gallery. Have fun folding, scrunching, twisting and sticking all kinds of paper to design and create your very own marvellous mask.

Judith Hope is a mask and puppet maker based in London. She creates innovative work for theatre, commercials, festivals and parades. When not creating in her studio she shares her skills by leading creative making workshops for adults, children and families.


Drop in, suitable for ages 4+.

The Shadow Makers

Create your very own shadow puppets inspired by Le Chat Noir. Create quirky characters and try them out on our shadow screen, before devising an exciting French cabaret-style show, with lights, music and an audience. 

Amie Taylor is a theatre-maker and puppeteer, specialising in shadow-puppetry. She started her own theatre company in 2015 called The Shadow Makers and has made three shows for children using puppetry and shadow puppets which have performed at Arcola Theatre, Omnibus Theatre, the Space and Latitude Festival.
