The Faculty (15) + Presentation by Colm Connaughton

Science on Screen

A group of teens stand in a hall looking concerned

The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers in this cult 90s, sci-fi horror set in a US high school, following a bunch of misfits as they attempt to navigate a covert parasitic takeover.

Overworked and underpaid, the teachers at Herrington High are miserable. Until one day, when a mysterious figure appears and takes away all their fears and doubts, allowing them to act in ways they have always wanted to. But at what cost? When a group of misfit students (including Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett and Clea DuVall) discover that something is amiss, they must band together to try to save their town.

Written by Kevin Williamson (Scream), directed by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi) and also featuring Salma Hayek, Jon Stewart, Robert Patrick and Usher Raymond.

Before the film, Colm Connaughton (Director of the London Mathematical Laboratory) presents on emergent phenomena; the idea that the whole is more than the sum of its parts and that collectives behave fundamentally differently from the individual units that make them up.
