Still from Godland

The faith of a young priest is trialed by the untameable Icelandic landscape in Hlynur Pálmason’s 19th century sublime drama.

Set in the late 1800s, a young Danish priest takes on a mission through the rural reaches of Iceland. The further into the landscape he ventures, the less of a grasp he holds on reality, his faith and his undertaken duty.

Inspired in part by late 19th century Icelandic photography, Godland follows a priest and photographer, Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove), as he sets out to establish a new remote parish. Hlynur Pálmason's vision is pulled off by breath-taking cinematography, as the artist takes to his homeland with fresh eyes.

In a contemporary rendition of the sublime, Godland looks at man's relationship to earth, to faith, and to himself; and importantly reminds us that we are, always, at the mercy of powers greater than us.
