The Stormy Man (12*)

Jazz on Screen

A man wearing a suit has his arm around the shoulder of a woman as they look at each other in a living room.

The atmospheric 50s Japanese classic about an angry young man (Yujiro Ishihara) aspiring to make it in the competitive and occasionally violent world Ginza’s seedy jazz nocturnal clubs.

Set to a lively score by the prolific composer Seitaro Omori, the film was a huge success upon release in Japan, with its moody noirish tones, alongside energetic, intense drum solos between the films star and his rival drummers.

The film captures the vitality of Tokyo, focusing featuring montages of neon signs, reflecting both the influence of the US and the growing modernisation of the city.
