I'm Fine (Thanks For Asking) (15)

Still from I'm Fine (Thanks For Asking)

A newly widowed mother fights to get her and her 8-year-old daughter off the streets of suburban LA in this sun-kissed social drama.

Set during the pandemic (but in no way a Covid cliché), I'm Fine (Thanks For Asking) centres around Dani, a recently widowed mother, and her 8-year-old daughter Wes (newcomer Wesley Moss). Under the guise of a fun camping trip, Dani tries to protect Wes from the truth: that they have no where to live, whilst she tries to earn enough to secure them an apartment.

Co-directed by Angelique Molina and lead Kelley Kali (Dani), the cast's performances are powerfully naturalistic. Despite being made on a micro budget, I'm Fine (Thanks For Asking) appears like an LA indie dreamscape, scooping up the Special Jury Award at SXSW Film Festival 2021. The film is a sombre reminder that we never really know what someone else is going through, and that 'I'm fine' very often means the complete opposite.
