Cairo Conspiracy (15)

Still from Cairo Conspiracy

A fisherman's son becomes the pawn for Egypt's political elites in exchange for a place at an Islamic University in Cairo, in Tarik Saleh's unnerving spy thriller.

When offered a scholarship to study at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Adam is over the moon. Once he starts his studies, he realises things are far more complicated in the city than back home in the countryside.

When the chief imam suddenly drops dead, Adam's life is thrown into disarray, and he is made to spy on the religious community for the government. Adam has to navigate the deep-rooted complexities of these two worlds whilst trying to keep himself alive, in this tense thriller that challenges religious and secular corruption.

A brave and powerful Arabic language film from Tarik Saleh, the Swedish-Egyptian director who made The Nile Hilton Incident in 2017), Cairo Conspiracy won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes 2022, and screened at London Film Festival in October.
