Tigran Hamasyan

Tigran Hamasyan wearing a yellow t shirt and black blazer

Jazz pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan performs his latest album, reimagining songs from the Great American Songbook.

Leading a trio (with bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Damion Reid) in performing songs such as ‘Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise’ and ‘Laura’, conventional narrative tunes are stretched with interludes and detours, grand reharmonizations and outbursts of whiplashing free percussion. Mixing his thoughtful approach to composition with the spontaneity of improvisation, he offers up profound new ways to hear old tunes.

A prolific artist since a young age, Tigran has released music on world-class labels such as Nonesuch and ECM, mixing his exploration of jazz with his grounding in Armenian folk music. A regular performer at the Barbican, he last performed here with trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær in 2018.
