Zulu (PG) + Presentation by Joseph Yose

Science on Screen

British redcoat at battle

Zululand, South Africa, 1879. This BAFTA nominated historical drama follows a group of outnumbered British soldiers as they do battle with Zulu warriors.

The British are fighting the Zulus & one of their columns has just been wiped out at Isandlwana. The Zulus next fix their sights on a small British outpost at Rorke’s Drift.

Before the screening scholar Joseph Yose discusses how network science can help us determine the authenticity of historical narratives.

Network science studies the connections between different constituents of a system and can be used to help understand human interactions in social networks such as Facebook. In this presentation, Yose uses the scientific tools of network analysis to reveal the structure of character interactions in the story of Shaku Zulu.

Is the social network he reveals more like Facebook, the Icelandic sagas, or the Marvel universe?

What can this tell us about the authenticity of the narrative as potentially handed down from generation to generation?
