Sound experimentalist and mixed-media practitioner Matana Roberts performs their landmark 2019 album Coin Coin Chapter IV: Memphis with full live band for the first time.

Memphis is the fourth instalment of Roberts' extraordinary Coin Coin album cycle, a project that has deservedly been awarded high praise and widespread critical acclaim for its fierce aesthetic originality and unflinching narrative power. It oscillates between meditative incantations, raucous melodic themes and unbridled bursts of free-improv; all the while quoting archly and ecstatically from folk traditions – it’s a work of 21st century liberation music.

Led by Roberts, who will be conducting while playing saxophone and clarinet, plus singing and speaking various texts generated from their own historical research and diaristic writing. Coin Coin Chapter IV is the latest instalment in this glorious and spellbinding projected twelve-part panoramic ‘sound-quilt’. Opening the show will be Slauson Malone 1.

Supporting the night will be Slauson Malone 1 – a live performance piece created by artist and musician Jasper Marsalis accompanied by cellist Nicky Wetherell, exploring the possible intersections of popular music and performance art.

Please note, the support performance will include haze and strobe lighting.
