Family Film Club

Ron and Barney laying in the grass, animated image

This heart-warmer from Disney is a fantastic adventure which asks some big questions about how A.I. and technology.

Set in a near future world where most children attend school with their own B-Bot – a personalised robot friend – seven year old Barney is mortified when his device malfunctions and sets him apart from his crowd of social-media obsessed classmates. However, as Barney and his B-Bot spend more time together, they realise they may have discovered the true meaning of friendship.

Before the film, we're joined by Christina Last, Data Scientist at the Alan Turing Institute, where she develops socially beneficial AI, most recently predicting the effects of air pollution on children in developing countries with UNICEF. Christina believes collaboration between STEM researchers and creatives is the best way to build fair and ethical AI.

Adults can only come if they’re bringing a child, and children can only come along if accompanied by an adult. If you’re over 18, we’re afraid being a ‘big kid’ doesn’t count.
