First Cow (12A)

two men stand next to each other surrounded by wilderness

Director Kelly Reichardt returns with a gripping and glorious story of friendship and petty crime on the harsh frontier of the Pacific Northwest.

A loner and talented cook (John Magaro) travels west and joins a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, and meets a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune. Soon the two collaborate on a successful but precarious cake-making business, the success of which depends upon the secret participation of a wealthy landowner’s prized milking cow – the very first, and only, in the territory.

Throughout the film Reichardt paints an authentic portrait of harsh frontier life in the early nineteenth century, depicting the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America and exploring the very foundations on which the country was built.

From 17 May (and unless guidance changes) six people or two households of any size can visit together as a group. Until guidance changes, we’ve created socially-distanced seating clusters. Please only sit directly beside someone from your household or support bubble, and avoid moving seats when you arrive, so we can keep a safe distance between you and other groups.

Review

‘It is a tremendously engaging story which does something that very few movies do: mention money. Something very palpable is at stake, the jeopardy is real and it’s a question of survival.‘
‘This strange US settler drama is the crème de la crème‘
