Chronic Youth 2021: Animation Short Film Programme (15*)

Cinema On Demand

An illustrated image, white lines on a black background. A collection of pictures stuck into a photo album, with the outlines of people in various poses you might expect in a photo album

Three powerful and heartfelt shorts use animation in different ways: to explore stories of complex identities, seeking and finding belonging, and overcoming loss and heartbreak.

Adekemi Roluga’s Fragments captures the complex experience of being biracial, combined with a fragmented home life. Pulling together moments with her British-Nigerian father, and at school and home for being ‘different’, Roluga’s narration speaks of loss, hope and resolution.

Marko Djeska’s All Those Sensations in My Belly champions self-love, supportive friendships and being authentic. Through animation, Djeska conveys Matia’s transition to female, going through frightening experiences and looking for love - an important story.

And in John Summerson's Februarium, a group of twenty-somethings stage an annual play to process their grief, bringing them together in laughter – a powerful medicine. A reminder of the sense of freedom that being together in-person can bring.
