BBC SO/Adams: Girls of the Golden West

John Adams conducting

John Adams conducts the UK premiere of his acclaimed new opera on the downtrodden victims and inspiring dreamers of the Californian gold rush.

John Adams’s 2017 opera on racial tension, sexual abuse and the sheer desperation of the nineteenth-century Californian gold rush has been called ‘a correction of American history’ by the LA Times and ‘an opera about the present’ by the New York Times.

Under the baton of the composer himself, including members of the original cast and using original source material and poetry by Mark Twain, the composer gives voices to the era’s downtrodden victims and inspiring dreamers.

The performance will finish at approximately 9.30pm. It includes a 20 minute interval.

This is a concert performance, with English surtitles.
