Varjack-Lowry: I, MELANIA

Open Lab Showcase

Two people with brown wigs and blue dresses stare solemnly directly at the camera

This multimedia show explores what it means to be ‘foreign’ at a time of divisive debate about immigration.

Using the current first lady of the United States as an avatar, I, MELANIA delves into Melania Trump’s journey from her home country to public life, raising questions around how societies view and respond to ‘foreigners’.

Performed by Paula Varjack and Chuck Blue Lowry, accompanied by an intergenerational group of female participants.

The Open Lab Showcase presents work-in-progress performances by emerging and mid-career artists following a period of research and development at the Barbican as part of the Open Lab Programme.
