Mank (12A)

Gary Oldman as Mank walking through a film set

Directed by David Fincher and starring Gary Oldman this super stylized film tells the story of how Orson Welles' masterpiece, Citizen Kane, came to be.

Cynical and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) is trying to write the script for Citizen Kane whilst lying in a hospital bed, at the same time the golden age of Hollywood whirls around him in the form of films sets, beautiful actors, hedonism and the notorious William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance).

This fantasy biopic revels in the glamour of Hollywood as well as its deep rooted corruption. David Fincher creates a trance-like version of events through beautiful shots, a monochrome colour palette and a style reminiscent of the cinema age he's portraying.

Reviews

  • ‘It’s a heartfelt, irresistibly watchable film, which incidentally serves up a quasi-Rosebud theory about the genesis of Kane‘
  • ‘Mank delivers Hollywood in a multitude of greys. Built on a towering performance by Gary Oldman, it’s smart, sophisticated, by turns thrilling and difficult, and amongst Fincher’s best‘
