Sounds and Visions Session Six

Roomful of Teeth + Claire M Singer

Roomful of Teeth standing on grass

Vocal octet Roomful of Teeth present a UK premiere performance of Caroline Shaw’s playful and exhilarating Partita for 8 Voices and a rendition of Judah Adashi’s atmospheric My Heart Comes Undone.

Incorporating into their performances vocal techniques borrowed from Inuit throat singers, Broadway belters and death metal screamers, Roomful of Teeth is an ensemble dedicated to ‘reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice’. Which makes Partita for 8 Voices, composed by Caroline Shaw – who’s also a member of the ensemble – the perfect composition for them. It’s a piece that sighs, mutters, twists and shouts over five movements, reminding us of the extraordinary things our voices are capable of.

First recorded in 2012, Partita for 8 Voices earned Shaw the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013, making her the youngest ever recipient of the award. Since then, she has worked with everyone from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to Kanye West, as well as working as a performing musician. Also appearing at this concert is composer, producer and performer Claire M Singer, who presents a selection of her organ works.
