Essential Debussy

London Symphony Orchestra/François-Xavier Roth

Photo of musician Roth

François-Xavier Roth marks the centenary of Debussy’s death with the masterworks that established the composer as the father of Impressionism.

The music of Claude Debussy is unmistakable for its beauty, testament to the suggestive power of music. Debussy at his best has the power to evoke both the foreign and the familiar – breathtaking natural landscapes, mystical scenes, the nostalgia of childhood.

This programme shows Debussy at his purest. We embark on a journey with the magical Prélude, which explored new melodic paths, before arriving at the Fantaisie, a perfectly-formed example of the composer’s mastery of atmosphere. We then take to the skies with the interplay of light reflected in the Nocturnes, and reach the depths of childhood imagination in Jeux. These are four of the composer’s most iconic works, and a fitting tribute to Debussy’s far-reaching influence.
