Festive Floral Dyeing Workshop with Botanical Inks

Image of floral dyeing with Botanical Inks as part of make! in the barbican shop

Use fresh flowers to naturally dye silk in this eco–conscious workshop with artisan dye studio, Botanical Inks.

Learn the contemporary 'bundle dye' process, for the direct application of plant dye colour from flowers and plant materials into cloth with a simple steaming technique.

Create a unique length of Botanical Inks printed cloth, using a special organic British-grown 'peace silk' to make into a scarf, pillowcase, ribbons or another creative project of your own. Getting in the festive spirit, we'll be using special madder red and chlorophyll green dyes, along with a selection of local seasonal plants.

You will leave with the knowledge and skills required to make your own bundle–dyed items again, using simple equipment which may be found in your kitchen, and with your own unique, natural dye printed length of silk.

About the makers

Botanical Inks is a natural dye studio based in Bristol, founded by botanical artist/designer Babs Behan.

They offer small-scale natural dyeing services for designers and businesses, and a platform for re-skilling creative communities with local plant knowledge and contemporary traditional "low-impact" surface application techniques. They teach people to forage for local colour-producing plants and use a variety of dye and print processes, without the use of any toxic synthetic chemicals or heavy metals.
