Elsewhere Within Here: African Voices (12A*) + Panel discussion

Chronic Youth Film Festival 2018

Adele, a short by Mirene Igwabi

A film by Alain Gomis (Félicité) is one of a bold selection of shorts by African filmmakers that offers a hazy glimpse into the reality of a childhood surrounded by violence and desolation.

Comprised of four short films, Elsewhere Within Here is styled after French/Senegalese film critic Fanta Sylla's project on the meaning of place and home. This programme's captivating stories explore intimacy, loss, joy and growth through the eyes of its formidable protagonists.

Featuring dreamy vignettes littered with philosophical ponderings, a heartbreaking fairytale with a standout hero and a story filled with dark truths and disrupted youth, this programme shows off some of the outstanding African talent both in front of and behind the camera.

Following the screening, there is a panel discussion with Barbican Young Programmers Kofo Owokoniran, Ayo Akingbade and Victoria Nambi, alongside Fanta Sylla, a cultural critic, editor and teacher whose work explores ideas of representation in relation to blackness, gender and places.
