Thibaudet/Batiashvili/Capuçon Trio

Lisa Batiashvili, Gautier Capuçon and Jean-Yves Thibaudet come together as colleagues – and friends – in piano trios by Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Ravel.

Ravel wrote his only piano trio in the early days of the First World War, but you’d never guess: its combination of sweeping ardour and translucent beauty belongs to a happier world. It’s a ravishing climax to this recital by a group that’s been justly described as a super-trio.

And it’s proof, too, that as a trio these three captivating artists – all regular collaborators, with a shared musical vision – add up to considerably more than the sum of their magnificent parts. The high romantic drama of Mendelssohn’s neglected Second Trio and the almost split personality of Shostakovich's first foray into chamber music, with its sharp shifts between romanticism and modern experimentation, should make a delicious complement to the Ravel. Expect these players to strike sparks off each other.

The performance is expected to finish around 9.20pm, including a 20 minute interval.
