Film still from The Fabulous Allan Carr

Hollywood power player Allan Carr had a sensational 30 year career, whose love of wearing a kaftan on any occasion was matched only by his flamboyant persona.

Known as the producer of musical mega-hit Grease, the sensational Broadway version of La Cages aux Folles and campy disco debacle Can’t Stop the Music, Carr was just was well known for throwing legendary parties, where Hollywood royalty mixed with LA’s gay underbelly.

Born Allan Solomon in Chicago, Carr set his eyes on La-la-lands glitzy lights at a young age. Beginning his career on Hugh Hefner’s Playboy TV series, he soon became manager to stars including Joan Rivers, Mama Cass, Tony Curtis and Ann Margret , before making his name by giving John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John their big breaks and discovering numerous actors, from Michelle Pfeiffer to Steve Guttenberg, all the while throwing extravagant parties that defined the decadent 1970s.

Jeffrey Schwarz (I Am Divine) immortalizes the life of this splashy entertainment impresario with plenty of depth, not shying away from the more vulnerable moments of Carr’s life, as well as an appreciation of Carr’s tendency for kitsch an pomp.
