Cool Cats (PG*)

EFG London Jazz Festival 2017

Film still from Cool Cats

Follow the adventures of American Jazz legends Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster in this dazzling documentary about their trip to Copenhagen in the mid-1960s.

At the height of their careers tenor saxophone stars Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon leave America’s racism and unrest, and a trail of alcohol and drug addiction, in the hope of a better life.  Including unearthed 8mm footage shot by Webster, this documentary offers an intimate look at the love affair the musicians had with the city of Copenhagen.

Beautifully arranged archive footage plays against rare performances from the two musicians, while contemporary interviews with friends, girlfriends and musicians delve deeper into the decade in which the expatriates made Copenhagen one of the most sought over jazz cities in Europe.
