The Green City Walking Tour with Chris Rogers

part of Make! Summer Workshops

Uncover the fascinating origins of the Square Mile’s green spaces with architectural historian, writer and lecturer Chris Rogers.

Oases of nature in a world of glass and steel, the City of London’s pocket parks have always been valued. Now, with well-being and sustainability to the fore, they are growing in number and variety. Many are intimately linked to the architecture around, above and below them, whether dramatic archaeology, long-lost buildings or enlightened planning decisions.

This summer join Chris Rogers, author of the popular How to Read London – a crash course in London architecture, on a walk south of the Barbican through woods, lawns, glades and pools to hear some of these stories. Architecture of all periods will be covered, including contemporary buildings by Norman Foster, Nicholas Grimshaw and Eric Parry. Significant sculpture and memorials, which often dot these quiet spaces, will also be pointed out.

  • Tour duration: 1.5 hours
  • Maximum capacity: 25
  • Meeting point: Barbican Shop
  • This tour has an age restriction of 16+. Participants below the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
