Bach's Goldberg Variations

Bach Weekend

Jean Rondeau

Bach’s Goldberg Variations, performed by the charismatic French harpsichordist Jean Rondeau.

Playful, intricate and endlessly inventive, Bach’s Goldberg Variations are bigger than the imagination of any one performer. Jean Rondeau’s energetic and utterly distinctive style has raised eyebrows in some quarters – but what he has to say in the Goldbergs should be truly refreshing.

After all, it’s not every harpsichord virtuoso who gets described by The Guardian as a “badass”. But make no mistake: Rondeau has a deep and instinctive musicianship. “Rondeau evidently listens as well as he plays” says Gramophone, praising his “thoughtful artistry” – and in music that’s greater than it can ever be played, his perspective will be intensely worth hearing.
