De Falla, Lalo & Stravinsky

London Symphony Orchestra/Jaime Martín

Jaime Martín

Flautist-turned-conductor Jaime Martín makes his debut with the LSO, introducing us to his musical roots with works inspired by his native Spain.

The stories, traditions and folk tunes of Andalusia are all at play in Da Falla’s The Three Cornered Hat. Lively rhythmic dances – the flamenco, the farruca, the jota, the fandango – and a vivid palette of orchestral colours come together to tell the ballet’s rambunctious tale. Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, too, is animated by the spirit and sounds of Spanish music, with violinist Christian Tetzlaff taking on the dizzying virtuosity of the solo.

To conclude, Martín turns to another ballet score – Stravinsky’s breakthrough The Firebird. The fantastical Russian legend of the mythical Firebird is told through the composer’s dazzling orchestrations, allusions to Russian folk music, frenetic rhythms and ringing, victorious conclusion.
