Orchestra Baobab posing with their instruments

Hailing from Senegal but steeped in Afro-Cuban traditions, Orchestra Baobab take their rightful place on the line-up for London’s Latin Music Festival – La Linea.

Playing music from their 2017 album, Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng, as well as classics drawn from their illustrious career, expect the unexpected in a show full of special surprises and distinctive sounds.

Fusing Afro-Cuban rhythm and Portuguese Creole melody with Congolese Rumba and High Life, the group kick-started a musical renaissance in 1970s Senegal, turning the capital, Dakar, into one of the world’s most vibrant musical cities. Over the next decade the group dominated the local scene, producing countless hits before disbanding in the mid-80s. Their 1982 album, Ken Dou Werente became a cult classic and was re-released to huge acclaim by World Circuit in 1989 as Pirate’s Choice.

In support is Malphino, a band whose reinterpretations of Cumbia rhythms create new and hypnotic tropical concoctions. Based in London, members of the Malphino collective come from Japan, Malaysia, Colombia, France, Philippines and the UK.
