London Schools Symphony Orchestra

The LSSO returns to the Barbican following its summer tour of Yorkshire and Birmingham, with a programme including Sibelius' Finlandia and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony.

Moving from places physical to places imagined, Sibelius’s powerful homage to his homeland Finlandia precedes Lyadov’s impressionist fairytale symphonic poem The Enchanted Lake, before we visit Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s Kakadu, a colourful and vivid homage to an Australian national park.

The centre piece, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 has left many young musicians with a profound and moving experience as performers.

Managed by the Centre for Young Musicians and part of the Guildhall Young Artists network, the London Schools Symphony Orchestra (LSSO) is London’s premier youth orchestra. The LSSO has a prestigious history of over 70 years, nurturing young musical talent and providing exceptional orchestral training for young musicians aged 13–19.

The concert will finish at approximately 9.30pm, including a 20-minute interval (timings subject to change).
