The Story of Looking (15) (AD)

Mark Cousins with his arm across his face in a still from The Story of Looking

A personal journey through the sights of his life, filmmaker Mark Cousins aims to record his own history of seeing before a major event, and so explores the meaning of images.

With a predisposition to macular degeneration and a cataract making itself known, Cousins must undergo surgery to repair and save his sight. Lying in bed, with his phone – and in the end, us – for company, Cousins reflects on the key images of his life, from the poignant (a man lingering on a rooftop) to the pedestrian (seven minutes of someone else looking at their phone.)

Exploring nuances in colour and light, moral and immoral gazes and more, it’s a thoughtful, intimate and charming ramble through one man’s history of images that might just resonate with a few more of us.
