Young Barbican Nights: Women in Jazz x Lee Krasner

A group of people standing under an arch in conservatory

Explore Lee Krasner’s relationship to jazz music in this interactive evening of creative workshops to coincide with the exhibition in our Art Gallery.

A prominent figure in American art, Krasner’s work reflects the spirit and creativity of post-war New York. Her love of jazz music was evident; her record collection spanned across Brenda Lee, Louis Armstrong and Thelonious Monk. Women in Jazz, a London-based organisation championing and nurturing the talents of female musicians across UK Jazz, present an evening of interactive workshops including play listing to Krasner’s work and a screening of the film The Girls In The Band.

Since the organisation’s inception, Women in Jazz has partnered with some of the most prestigious venues and institutions in the UK including: Ronnie Scott’s, Jazz FM and Gilles Peterson’s radio station, Worldwide FM. You can find artists such as Yazz Ahmed, Zara Mcfarlane and Yolanda Charles on their monthly Soho Radio broadcasts.

Action Collage: making and re-making the ever-evolving body of work
Drop-in, throughout the evening

Join collage and moving-image artist, Cosima Cobley Carr in a collaborative collage-making workshop. Drawing on Lee Krasner's method of using her past artwork to create new work, participants are invited to create their own portraits or figure drawings which they will then re-use to create new collage works using a range of materials. Through this process, we ask participants to question not only how to represent themselves or another person, but how to represent the whole experience of being a person, in a body.
