A celebration of post-colonial African nations and a call for liberation for the rest of the continent, the 1969 Pan-African Cultural Festival threw a global spotlight on African culture and arts. 

The film, by celebrated filmmaker-photographer William Klein, is first of all a remarkable document of this historic event – of the crowds, and of the political speeches, music, dance and theatrical performances by the different delegations from across the continent.

Alongside sequences from the festival, Klein collages a range of visual materials, from posters to archival photos and film footage, with bold graphics and interviews with activists, making a kind of visual essay on colonialism, neo-colonialism and the role of culture in liberation movements. 

The whole culminates in an electrifying final sequence featuring legendary jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp performing on stage with local Algerian musicians.
